1. more than
more than这个词组本身是“多于，超出，比...多，不仅仅，不止”这个含义。例如：Altogether more than 70 percent of the surface of our planet is covered by water. 这句话可以翻译为：我们星球的表面有超过70%的部分都是被水所覆盖的。
而且，more than 放在名词之前，就是“不仅仅”这个含义了。例如：
①Hibernation is more than sleep. 冬眠不仅仅是睡眠。
②You’re more than one man fighting.你不只是一个人在战斗。
此外，more than 用于形容词或副词前，则是可以用来表示程度的。 例如：
①My parents are more than kind to me.则意为：父母对我非常好。
②She is more than careful in doing things. 她做事非常认真。
③In class , he listens more than attentively. 课堂上，她聚精会神的听着。
另外，more than用于句子前，还可用来表示否定。如：
He earns more money than he can spend.他挣了好多钱都花不完。
2. more A than B和less B than A
我们都知道，more后面接的是肯定的对象，less后面的是否定对象。那than呢?More A than B,的含义是“是A而不是B”;与其说B，不如说A”.
①He was more frightened than hurt. 与其说他受伤了，不如说他被吓到了。
②He is more lucky than clever.他是幸运，而不是聪明。
③He is more a close friend than a boyfriend to her. 他对她而言，是一个亲密的朋友，而不是男朋友。
而less B than A则是“是A而不是B”的含义。如：
Jim is less honest than his brother. 这句话则可翻译为“Jim不像他兄弟那样诚实”。
3. no more ...than和not...any more than
no more ...than和not...any more than的含义也是相同的，意思是“正如...也不那样，A和B都不”。如：
Marry is no more diligent than Tom. 这句话的意思是“Marry和Tom都不勤奋”。同样的，We can no more leave the Party than fish can leave water.这句话的意思则是：我们不能离开宴会，正如鱼不能离开水一样。
4. no more than 和not any more than
no more than 和 not any more than这对词组和前面所讲的有所不同，它们意思是相同的，都是“不多于，不超过”的含义。例如：
Abraham Lincoln's whole school education added up to no more than one year. 这句话的含义就是：Abraham Lincoln的整个学校教育时间加起来不超过一年。
5. not more... than
这个词组看起来和not more than相似，但是含义有很大的不同。它是“不比...”的意思。
This story is not more interesting than that one. 这个故事并不比那个故事有趣。
=This story is not so/ as interesting as that one. 这个故事和那个故事一样无趣，没有吸引力。
