写英文论文常走两个极端:要么满篇"we prove""it is certain",显得狂妄、容易被审稿人抓包;要么通篇"maybe""might",读起来像没底气。中间那条线,靠的就是hedging——模糊限制语,学术写作里专门用来"留余地"的表达。
什么是hedging?就是用suggest、indicate、appear、likely、to some extent这类词,把绝对断言软化成"基于现有证据,似乎如此"。它的作用不是含糊,而是诚实:告诉读者这是你的解释,不是铁律。比如不说"Our method solves the problem",而说"Our method appears to mitigate the problem in the tested settings",既表达了贡献,又划清了边界。
用错的两种典型。一是过度hedging,每句都might、possibly,审稿人读完不知道你到底发现了什么,结论是"作者自己都不信"。二是错误位置,在方法部分该确定的地方也hedge,比如"we might have collected the data",显得操作不严谨。经验法则:结果和方法讲事实,少hedge;解读和展望讲意义,多hedge。
翻平台的成功服务学生案例,有同学初稿把结论写成"this confirms that X causes Y",被审稿人批推论过度;平台顾问帮他改成"these results are consistent with the view that X contributes to Y",既保住贡献又守住了边界,返修一次过关。类似案例平台积累不少,覆盖多个学科方向。
